Morphology and Longer Distance Dependencies

چکیده
This paper illustrates the advantages of laboratory research into SLA by describing two studies of acquisition of second language syntax. The first addresses the question of whether human morphological abilities can be understood in terms of associative processes or whether it is necessary to postulate rule-based symbol processing systems underlying these skills. We demonstrate that acquisition of L2 morphology shows frequency effects for both regular and irregular forms and that the acquisition course of learners’ accuracy and reaction time can be accurately simulated by connectionist systems. The second concerns a bootstrapping account of SLA whereby processes of chunking in phonological memory underpin the acquisition of longterm memory for utterances and abstractions of grammatical regularities. It shows that phonological short-term memory is particularly important in the acquisition of long-distance dependencies. In both cases, it is argued that these aspects of SLA reflect associative learning processes. When SLA research is properly focused on acquisition,

متن کاملERP effects of the processing of syntactic long-distance dependencies.
In behavioral studies on sentence comprehension, much evidence indicates that shorter dependencies are preferred over longer dependencies, and that longer dependencies incur a greater processing cost. However, it remains uncertain which of the various steps involved in the processing of long-distance dependencies is responsible for the increased cost of longer dependencies. Previous sentence co...
متن کاملSemitic Morphological Analysis and Generation Using Finite State Transducers with Feature Structures
This paper presents an application of finite state transducers weighted with feature structure descriptions, following Amtrup (2003), to the morphology of the Semitic language Tigrinya. It is shown that feature-structure weights provide an efficient way of handling the templatic morphology that characterizes Semitic verb stems as well as the long-distance dependencies characterizing the complex...
متن کاملFinite-State Morphological Analysis Of Persian
This paper describes a two-level morphological analyzer for Persian using a system based on the Xerox finite state tools. Persian language presents certain challenges to computational analysis: There is a complex verbal conjugation paradigm which includes long-distance morphological dependencies; phonological alternations apply at morpheme boundaries; word and noun phrase boundaries are difficu...
متن کاملMorphology of Human Insula in Iranian Population and its Relationship with Sex, Age, and Handedness: an Imaging Anatomical Study
Background and Aim: Topography of the human insula has occasionally been studied in different populations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the morphology of human insula in Iranian population and its relationship with sex, age, and handedness via magnetic resonance imaging. Methods and Materials/Patients: In our study, 380 normal magnetic resonance imaging were enrolled. The number...
